Messi’s seventh golden ball and Ronaldo’s harsh criticism of the French football editor

After a year-long hiatus, the European Football Ballon d’Or was awarded last night (November 29) for the seventh time to Lionel Messi, in a season in which Robert Lewandowski had a stunning performance. Cristiano Ronaldo, who was not in the top five for the first time since 2010, has objected to remarks by the award-winning editor of France Football.

Lionel Messi, 34, helped Argentina win the Copa America (Messi’s first major national title) and scored 40 goals in 2021 (28 for Barcelona, 4 for Paris Saint-Germain and 8 for Argentina).

Bayern Munich’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, Chelsea’s Italian midfielder Georginio and Real Madrid’s French striker Karim Benzema are next in line.

The Ballon d’Or is awarded by France Football Magazine based on the votes of 180 journalists. This award was not given last year due to the Corona epidemic.

From 2008 to 2019, the award was given either to Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, with one exception in 2018, which was won by Luka Modric, the midfielder of the Croatian national team and Real Madrid.

Messi had a record of winning this award before the previous award, the star of Paris Saint-Germain had also won this award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019.

“It’s unbelievable to be here again. Two years ago I thought this was the last time. People started asking when I was going to retire, but now I’m again,” Messi said at the ceremony, which took place at the Teatre du Shuttle in Paris. “I’m in Paris and I’m very happy.”

“I do not know if this was the best year of my life or not. I have had a long career. But after the championship with Argentina, following the difficult and critical times that existed, I can say that it was a special year.”

The award was given to Messi while Robert Lewandowski had a brilliant performance, and last year when the award was not presented, it seemed that he was the first chance to win the Ballon d’Or. Many thought he would win the award in Paris this year.

Lewandowski scored 53 goals for Bayern Munich in 2021 and won the Striker of the Year award shortly before the start of the ceremony.

“I want to say that it is a great honor to be in competition with Robert. He deserved to win the award last year,” said Lionel Messi, who finished second on this year’s list.

Winner of the Golden Boy Award 2021

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarama, who won Euro 2020 with Italy, won the Lou Yashin Award for Best Goalkeeper, and Chelsea, the Champions League winners, also won the Europa League. The 19-year-old Barcelona striker’s father also won the Copa Award for Best Under-21 Player in the World.

Alexia Potias, the 27-year-old Barcelona and Spanish national football team midfielder, won the Women’s Ballon d’Or. The Barça captain won the Spanish and European championships with the team last season and became the top scorer in Europe with 27 goals. Potias was also named UEFA Player of the Year and UEFA Midfielder of the Year.

Ronaldo sharply criticizes France Football

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese star of Manchester United, accused the editor of France Football of lying. Pascal Farre told the New York Times that Ronaldo only wished he had won more Ballon d’Ors than Messi when he retired.

Ronaldo, who has won five Ballon d’Ors so far, is now ranked sixth in France.

“I always try for myself and the club I play for. I work for myself and for those I love, not against one person,” said the Portugal captain.

Mr Ronaldo told the New York Times on Friday: “Ronaldo only has the ambition to retire with a golden ball more than Messi. I know this because he told me so.”

Ronaldo wrote on social media: “Pascal Farah lied. He used my name to promote himself and his magazine. It is unacceptable for a person in charge of an award with this credit to lie like this. It is a complete disrespect to a person. “France has always had respect for football and the Ballon d’Or.”

“My biggest dream is to win national and international titles for the club I play for and my national team. My biggest ambition is to have my name written in golden letters in the history of football.”

Ronaldo last won the Ballon d’Or in 2017, and this is the first time since 2010 that his name is not among the top five on the list.
