Russia’s currency, the ruble, has collapsed. It’s worth less than Roblox’s in-game currency, robux. The economic collapse has also affected the video game Escape from Tarkov, which uses the ruble, euro, dollar, and Bitcoin as in-game currencies and uses real-world exchange rates within the game. As the Russian economy collapses and the value of the ruble plummets, it’s become harder to do some things in Escape from Tarkov.

Escape from Tarkov is a cult hit video game developed by Russian studio Battlestate Games. Players take control of rival mercenaries competing over loot in semi-abandoned demilitarized zones on Russia’s borders. The game has a complex economy where players can trade for weapons, bullets, and supplies using rubles, dollars, euros, and bitcoin.

Rubles are the game’s default currency, and players begin with ₽500,000. As they explore the world and complete missions, they can loot rubles from the world and other players or even earn rewards from quest givers in rubles. The problem is that some of the game’s NPCs only operate in euros and dollars. If you want to buy fancy weapons or complete quests with an NPC named Peacemaker, you’re gonna need dollars. The exchange rate being what it is, those quests are now significantly harder to complete.

Peacekeeper and Skier are two characters who deal in dollars and euros, respectively. Players can pay them to earn permanent bonuses to stats. But with the collapse of the ruble, those tasks have become significantly more expensive. “Just a heads-up: the Mentor task now costs 9M rubles to complete if you buy the Euros from Skier,” one post on /r/EscapefromTarkov said.

Many game developers are being affected by the Russia-Ukraine War, but Battlestate Games doesn’t anticipate any problems with Escape from Tarkov due to sanctions on Russia or other issues.

Enter Battlestate Games, developer of the popular first-person shooter Escape from Tarkov. They, too, are headquartered in Russia, leading some players to raise concerns about the future of this online-only game. Thankfully, one developer has taken the time to ease their concerns.

While damirka_ea did not go into specifics, there is a good reason that Escape from Tarkov is unlikely to be seriously affected by anything going on in Russia. AltChar covers the subject well — it notes that while many of the game’s developers are living and working in Russia, Battlestate Games is actually headquartered in London.

There is also the matter of Tarkov’s servers. There is no one “Tarkov” server that you connect to; there are dozens of servers located all throughout the world, including the United States and Europe. While Russia does have 8 servers of its own, the other European servers could pick up the slack if anything prevents players from connecting to the Russian servers.

State of the game aside, Battlestate Games has otherwise chosen to remain radio silent on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict — a choice that has been made by several other Russian game developers, too. For now, the game is still quite playable — you can pre-order Escape from Tarkov on PC starting at $44.99 or your regional equivalent and get instant access to its long-running closed beta.

Set in the fictional Norvisnk region, you play as one of two factions in Escape From Tarkov and duke it out in online raids. Part of Escape from Tarkov’s USP is its in-game economy that lets you buy and trade. You can use real-world money and even Bitcoin, but with Battlestate Games being a Russian developer, things have been turned upside down.

According to The Loadout, the crash of the Russian rouble has led to Escape from Tarkov’s own economy crumbling. As part of sanctions and seizure of assets, the rouble has lost 30% of its value in a matter of days and is at its lowest point ever. The site reports that the in-game rouble has lost nearly as much as its real-world equivalent.
